SD Afterschool Partnership Will Speak in Eight Cities in April 2012

Hello after-school advocates!

I will be joining my colleagues from South Dakota Voices for Children and South Dakota Kids Count on an eight city tour on the status of South Dakota children.

You are invited!

Speakers include
• Carole Cochran, director of South Dakota KIDS COUNT, The University of South Dakota, Beacom School of Business;
• Susan Randall, executive director, South Dakota Voices for Children;
• Greg Boris, senior policy and program specialist, South Dakota Voices for Children;
• Erin Bofenkamp, director, South Dakota Afterschool Partnership.

The briefings will include information from the just-released SD KIDS COUNT Factbook (with the latest Census data for each community); an overview of wins/losses for children in the 2012 Legislature and a report on South Dakota Out-of-School Time programs.

Reservations are not needed; the briefing is open to all who are interested in improving the lives of South Dakota children.

It would be great to see some familiar faces in the audience as I travel around the state! Please help pass along the word by inviting your colleagues and friends.

Afterschool Day at the Capitol a success in 2012

After-school participants and advocates gathered in Pierre at the state capitol on February 8, 2012 to advocate for quality after-school programs. Program directors were present to show lawmakers the enriching activities happening across the state during the hours after school is out. These programs keep kids safe, enhance school day learning and help South Dakota’s working families.

21st Century Community Learning Centers Now Accepting New Grant Applications

The 2012 application process for 21st Century Community Learning Centers is now open. Applications are due February 24, 2012.

To help potential applicants with the process, the 21st CCLC team has set up two webinars. The webinars will provide guidance and a chance for questions. While not required, applicants are strongly encouraged to participate in one of the webinars.

2012 Legislative Session Offers Advocacy Opportunities

The South Dakota Afterschool Partnership is gearing up to participate in Children’s Day and Afterschool Day at the Capitol in Pierre. These are great opportunities to visit with policymakers to help assure that every child of school age will have access to enriching opportunities in a safe and healthy environment.

Children’s Day is presented by South Dakota Voices for Children and will be held Tuesday, February 7.

Afterschool Day is presented by the South Dakota School Age Care Alliance and will take place on Wednesday, February 8.

2012 Children in Nature Backpack Grants

Kids who play outside know more about nature, do better in school, have higher self-esteem, and are healthier, physically and mentally. To help increase the amount of time children spend being active outdoors, the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks and the South Dakota Department of Health are teaming up to award Children in Nature backpacks to after-school and out-of-school programs in South Dakota. They’re each filled with a variety of items to encourage daily outdoor activity, such as bug boxes, fishing poles, outdoor games and more. And it’s a grant, which means that they’re free! : Aberdeen Mayor Mike Levsen, who served as emcee for the 2011 state Lights On Afterschool observance, interviews Rebekah White, whose mural was reproduced in corn on the Corn Palace.

: Rob Monson, principal of Parkston Elementary School, also serves as president of the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

: Tiffany Brink, the parent of a YWCA afterschool participant in Sioux Falls, talks about the value of such programs to her family and her employer.

: Marilyn Rasmussen of Brookings is Youth Development/4-H Specialist at South Dakota State University. She chairs the South Dakota Afterschool Partnership.

: Entertainment at Lights On Afterschool was provided by members of Xtreme Cheer of Mitchell.

: As she read South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s proclamation supporting Lights On Afterschool, Billie Jo Bakeberg, Spearfish, who serves as president, South Dakota School Age Care Alliance, invited after-school providers to stand and be recognized.

: After-school providers stood together as the governor’s proclamation was read.
